Live Illustration: A First Attempt

If you have been following along on my posts, you will remember that facilitation is a passion for me.  It may quite possibly be my favorite part of what I do working teams and organizations.

A particular skillset or area of expertise that interests me is visual facilitation.  I was first introduced to this idea in early 2017 in a Visualization Workshop hosted by Stuart Young of RadTac.  It was there that I learned the simple techniques of drawing (pun intended) from a bank of icons to graphically depict the key themes and main ideas of the conversation.

Over the past two weeks, I had two great experiences that I wanted to try to capture with live illustration on my iPad pro. This week I attended the annual Triangle Organizational Development Network (TODN) conference.  I have never been to one, but what a great event! The opening keynote was Tim Kelley, a fellow former military service member and author.  There were two other sessions in the afternoon and lots of great introductions and conversations.  Here is my live illustration from the day:

And last week I had the distinct privilege of attending a Certified Agile Leader (CAL-1) class taught by my colleague, Bob Galen. This was a private course for a client, and there were lots of interesting ideas that emerged not only from Bob’s training content but in the course of the spontaneous insights, observations, and conversations that occurred throughout the event. Here is the final version of my illustration. I think it really captures some essential threads from our time together.

I hope to be able to do more of this in the future, and I certainly want to practice so that I can get faster and sketching a key idea easily so that I can move onto the next important idea.

Until the Next Iteration . . .

Jason
