Open Space

Today at the Global Scrum Gathering in San Diego I experienced my first open space! It was a very exciting day.  I loved the collaborative, creative, and open nature of the event. My colleague and fellow coach, Luca Bergero, and I had the courage to propose topics as hosts for the open space.

Dozens of awesome topics proposed from the over 1,200 people attending the event.

Luca gave an amazing talk called Could Listening Save the World?  He explored the Cynefin Framework, the three levels of listening, and many other ideas.

Luca facilitating an awesome discussion on listening.

I hosted a session about the Integral Agile Framework, developed by Michael Spayd and Lyssa Adkins of the Agile Coaching Institute based on the Integral Operating Systems, also known as the Integral Framework developed by Ken Wilber.

Debrief and share-out after our rotating flipcharts exercise.
The final product.

A quick slideshare regarding the integral agile framework may be helpful to you.  There is also a podcast on InfoQ from Lyssa and Michael on the topic.

A simplified version of the Integral Agile Framework

I find this framework to be extremely useful when thinking not only about designing retrospectives and other discussions as a facilitator, but also in my coaching approach to individuals and teams.  I fully intend to do more reading on Ken Wilber and his work.

Until the next iteration . . .
